Fly is a calypso with a longer melodic form that portrays a feel-good scene where life is humming along. The second, contrasting section has both parts performing concertedly as they take the melodic motive up, up and up. The tenor part features a variation over the harmonies of the first section and the accompaniment has the challenge of being a support for the cheery melody. A fun piece to add to any concert for intermediate or advanced students. Add a third performer on congas or bongos to fill out the piece. Add additional percussionists as you see fit.
Probably Elgar’s best remembered and most played composition from it’s use in graduation ceremonies, this march highlights the ability of the ensemble to present contrasting expressive moods in a single piece.
