This arrangement of the hit by The Drifters is perfect for an intermediate band. It’s a recognizable tune and certain to be a crowd pleaser. The cellos and double seconds play a straightforward comping pattern dotted with occasional responses to the melody, over a nice easy rock groove. After playing through the melody twice, there is a soli section for the tenors that is unison at first, but splits into parallel 6ths for the climax. Then it’s back to the melody one time followed by the outro. For less experienced tenor sections, it would be best to split them into two groups for the second half of the soli to tackle the harmony.
Probably Elgar’s best remembered and most played composition from it’s use in graduation ceremonies, this march highlights the ability of the ensemble to present contrasting expressive moods in a single piece.
This beautiful aria is often erroneously attributed to J.S. Bach due to its inclusion in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, but was most likely written by the German composer Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel.
