The Monarchs of Calypso series highlights some of the most important calypsos of the 20th century, making them readily playable for beginning to intermediate steel bands. Selected for this series are landmark songs by calypsonians who have won the Calypso Monarch (i.e. Calypso King) title during Trinidad’s carnival. In addition to the goal of proliferating these great songs, we hope that steel bands will take the opportunity to learn more about the performers and stories behind them. As an added bonus, each piece in the series comes with notes on the history of the songs and background on the artists. To become familiar with these calypsos is to gain an insight into the cultural history of carnival, steel band, and indeed the nation of Trinidad and Tobago.
This lively refrain and variations from the French Baroque master gives the intermediate to advanced soloist a chance to show off the agility required of runs, turns and ornamental figures at a rapid pace.
