Backyard Finns was written to showcase the resonating quality of pans in the “sweet” registers, this is a modern calypso, post soca. More accurately, it is a calypso with a backbeat implied (true fusion of Trinidadian/USA styles). It was featured at the 2010 PAS mass band reading session as well as recorded by UA steel, PANic All Stars, and the “Massive Band 2000” concert in Long Beach, Calif. It is not meant to be a fast piece, but medium as indicated by the tempo. It should swing slightly like an older calypso, while being funky. Preference is for this piece not to have the iron to give the audience’s ear a break. This style is to calypso what “timba” is to latin music. Lots of room to open up and freely interpret the solo sections.
Ranges:
Tenor D4 – C#6
Double Seconds Ab3 – C5
Guitars Bb3 – C4
Six Bass C2 – E3
Duration: 4:00 – 5:00 depending on length of solos.
This beautiful aria is often erroneously attributed to J.S. Bach due to its inclusion in the Notebook for Anna Magdalena Bach, but was most likely written by the German composer Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel.
